Henri Matisse (1869–1954) was a French artist celebrated as one of the most influential figures of modern art. Originally trained in law, he turned to painting in his early twenties, developing a style known for its bold use of color, fluid lines, and expressive forms. Matisse was a leading figure in the Fauvist movement, which emphasized painterly qualities and vibrant color over realism. Throughout his career, he constantly experimented with form and technique, from painting to sculpture to his famous late-career cut-outs. Despite periods of illness, Matisse remained creatively prolific, producing works that continue to inspire for their sense of joy, simplicity, and emotional power.
